Josh L, Adult student

I started lessons with Lizzy at 49 years old, short on formal voice training.  I did take some music theory courses at Oberlin in college and have played piano through life. I'm also a doctor and consider myself a pretty bright guy. One thing that impressed me with Lizzy is that anything that came up during lessons she could explain with either the neurobiology of generating sound, or physics, or mathematics, or something else academic. I have not yet found something about voice that she does not know.

I'm so thrilled that you are here and interested in learning more about voice lessons with me!

Teaching voice and pursuing research in vocal pedagogy bring me as much joy as performing does, and I feel so fortunate that this is the life path I get to pursue. I use my background in neuroscience and cognition to guide my students toward results in their chosen genre as efficiently as possible. Through concepts of motor learning theory, I help my students be able to quickly identify tensions within their own bodies that is stopping them from singing with their most free and released sound. I utilize my strong background in psychoacoustics to help students find balance in vocal color but with the freedom to adjust according to a genre's needs. My approach to voice teaching is student-centered: I am committed to creating a safe environment for my students to explore making new sounds and finding repertoire that aligns with them as a person. Most importantly, I center fun and joy in my work with students, so that no matter where they are in their development, they can feel the healing effects of singing on their bodies.
